How to Make a Costa Rica Visa Renewal Border Run?

Each situation is different depending on the passport issuing country, the country chosen for the crossing, the way of transportation, and its a possibility that your appearance (profiling is practiced) and the mood of each immigration official can play a role with this renewal permit.

Here is a checklist of items and bits of advice you need to obtain a renewal with no problems.

• Onward travel tickets or Charter Flight Reservation
• Valid Passport
• Proof of funds
• A completed Health Pass at https://salud.go.cr/
   
  • Starting August 1st, 2021, children under the age of 18 and people who are fully vaccinated will be allowed to enter the country as tourists without the need for purchasing insurance. If you have not been vaccinated, you have not completed your full vaccine series or you do not meet the minimum 14-day requirement, you will need to purchase insurance to enter Costa Rica.
• You will be paying Costa Rican departure/exit tax ($29 by air) as well as entry and/or exit taxes for the other country and various fees.
• A backup plan
  • There’s no guarantee that either country will grant you a tourist visa for the time frame you expected. That is to say, you might be given 60 days instead of 90, in which case you will need to renew sooner.

Accepted Vaccines.

To be allowed to enter without insurance, the COVID-19 vaccination record card will be mandatory. This card must be uploaded when completing the Health Pass mentioned above.

The document must include:

• Complete name of the person
• Date of application per every dose*
• Corresponding Pharmaceutical Company (only Moderna, Pfizer-BioTech, AstraZeneca y Johnson & Johnson will be accepted, every one of these vaccines, except for the Johnson & Johnson vaccine, requires 2 doses. If you have received the Moderna, Pfizer-BioTech, or AstraZeneca vaccine and you have received only 1 shot, then you cannot enter based on your vaccination card and you will need insurance).

*The last or only dose of the vaccine must have been applied at least 14 days before arriving in Costa Rica to be able to enter without insurance.

How long do you have to be out of the country?

There are tons of rumors when it comes to this, and if you don’t like the answer you got from one person, just ask someone else.   Even immigration officials will give you contradictory information when it comes to how long. When we asked the Immigration Administration, their answer was “There is no minimum amount of time outside Costa Rica required for re-entry for U.S. Passport holders and other nationalities who do not need visas to enter Costa Rica”.

Can you just cross the border and come back the same day?

The short answer is YES, however you may run into issues at the border.
